From September 14 (Wed.) to 19 (Mon.), 2022, 9 students from Hawkeye Community College in the United States. were invited to Japan as part of the “Sakura Science Exchange Program “※ of the Japanese Science and Technology Agency (JST) for a training program on next-generation agriculture in Japan and the U.S. under the theme ” Sustainable Soil Management and Farming Patterns for Cooperation between Japan and the U.S.”.
The group participated in a drone-based agriculture training program at a farm affiliated with the University’s Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences in order to actually experience Japanese agriculture, which has the technology to efficiently manage small farmlands in a multifaceted manner.
In addition, the group visited various farms in Yamanashi Prefecture to observe production sites in an organic farm, an animal husbandry, and a smart farm.
The group also exchanged opinions with students from the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences on agricultural systems in both Japan and the U.S., as well as environmental risks and policies facing agriculture in both countries.
A student who participated said,” This was an amazing opportunity that I am very grateful for! Being able to visit the chicken farm and learn about the green composting was very interesting!”.
It was a very meaningful training program.
